Reporting Recycling Numbers

We are doing a great job recycling in Providence Public Schools so far this year! 

However, to be eligible for the $1000 prize, someone at each school must report recycling numbers each week for the weeks of October 15th through November 9th.

We want to keep the $1000 in Providence, and we need your help to do that! Plus, I'm sure your school could use the money!

Not Recycling?... What's your excuse?

There is no reason not to recycle in your classrooms, and here's an example of that:

Alvarez High School, and Mrs. Cappelli's Community Class has taken on the recycling challenge at their school.  Like most schools in Providence Public School District, they do not have enough bins for their classrooms, and don't have much excitement around recycling.  But here are a few ways that they are working to turn those things around, and work through their shortage of bins. 

These are bins that Mrs. Cappelli's class made, to make up for their shortage. I'd rather have one of these than a regular green plastic bin.  They taped plastic garbage bags inside cardboard boxes, so that the boxes would not get ruined.  When they ran out of 'Extra Recycling' stickers, they just photocopied one, and used paper copies instead.  

They also made signs to post around the school and in some classrooms. 

Thanks to Sarah Cappelli and her class at Alvarez for showing us how we can get people involved and make a difference without the resources we thought were necessary! 

Eco-Schools Resources

Take a minute to check out the Eco-Schools website! 

The site has a lot of awesome resources for schools to amp up their recycling, decrease water, waste and energy use.  

If you register your school, and do some easy reporting steps, you can register as an Eco-School, and be placed among hundreds of schools nationwide that are going green. 

The site also offers FREE standardized recycling stickers, that you can order through the webpage.

Keep America Beautiful has a nation-wide K-12 recycling competition, that all Providence Public Schools are now signed up for! There will be no extra  work for you and your school, since the reporting process will be the same.  However, there are a few GREAT incentives to participate, which we are very excited about! Check out the competition at www.recycle-bowl.org

Rewards:

With all Providence Schools signed up, Rhode Island is currently the 5th state for number of schools registered! This is a great opportunity to show off our little state on a national scale! 

Oh yeah, and the winning schools in each state gets $1000!! Talk about incentive! The national winner will receive another $1000, plus a gift card for supplies for their school. 

Because we signed up among the first 1000 schools, each of your schools will receive a toolkit in the mail, which will include lots of fun stuff to help out the recycling program at your school! In order for them to send the toolkit to you, we need you to register for our competition, so we can give them your name to send it to.

TIMELINE UPDATE!

Because of the hectic nature of the beginning of the school year, we have decided to push back the start date of the challenge to October 1st, 2012.  

We will be happy to meet with you before then, if you have any questions or would like help starting up a program in your school.

Book Donations

In recent travels around the district, we have noticed a number of teachers purging their classroom books. Our fear is that they are ending up in the recycling bin, or worse, the trash. 

This organization, Books Are Wings, donates books to PPSD, so here's a way we can help them back by donating our unwanted books to them.  

On the Books Are Wings website, you can contact them and schedule a time for them to come pick-up books, or find a drop-off location.  This is a great time of the year to go through books, and decide what you want in your classroom for the new school year, and what others might be able to use.  

Before donating, hold a book trade in your school. Have teachers bring their unwanted books, and they can look through and take books that other teachers want to get rid of. After the book trade, call Books Are Wings, and have them come pick up what ever books are left.  

This is a great way to get resources to schools and families with few resources and not enough books for their children! 

Do You Need More Bins?

Starting out this challenge, we understand that there is a shortage of bins in almost all of the schools.  We have some bins that we will bring around to schools and give to the recycling champion to disburse (once they register). When you register, add in your comments that you need more bins, or e-mail Kathryn Davis.  However, we do not have enough bins at this point for every office and classroom in every school.  

If you still need bins once we have passed out the ones we have, let us know, and we can get you some "Extra Recycling" stickers.  You can put these stickers on the side of any box or container to use as a recycling bin.  We should get another bunch of bins in around the end of October, and will pass them out to schools as soon as we can. 

Please have only the Recycling Champion request bins and stickers, to prevent a doubling of efforts. Thank You!

Below, we have included a link to the weekly submitting form.  Please submit your school's bins counts by Friday evenings, so we can update numbers on Mondays. If you say on your registration form that you would like weekly updates, we will send out a reminder to update your bin count, and a monthly reading of the current standings.

Providence Schools Recycling Challenge 2012 - KICKOFF!

Welcome to the first-ever Providence Schools Recycling Challenge!


This challenge will run from September 3rd through the end of November 30th, 2012.  

The winner will be calculated by the amount of recycling collected per student at each school.

We look forward to working with each of the schools to increase recycling and overall waste diversion! We have a unique opportunity, as we are now able to recycle all plastic, glass, paper, cardboard and aluminum in one bin.  With new renovations at the recycling facility, they are able to separate the materials there! 

Keep an eye on this site for updates regarding the challenge, including registration information, data submitting form, and school recycling standing throughout the challenge.  

We will also use the site to share information on how your school can easily implement environmental initiatives into your every day routine!
